What is Third Party Inspection (TPI)?

TPI full form and meaning

TPI stands for Third Party Inspection. It is an independent inspection carried out by a qualified agency that has no commercial interest in the buyer or the seller. The role of the third party is to verify — on behalf of the purchaser, statutory authority or end user — that equipment, materials, welding, fabrication, testing and installation meet the agreed codes, standards and contract specifications.

In practice TPI covers activities like material identification, dimensional checks, witnessing of destructive and non-destructive testing, review of quality documents, pressure testing, load testing of lifting equipment, and issue of an independent inspection release certificate.

Statutory requirements in India

Under the Factories Rules and the Building & Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Rules, lifting appliances, lifting gear, pressure plant and hoists must be thoroughly examined by a Government-recognized Competent Person at prescribed intervals (typically every 12 months for cranes and every 6 months for chains and slings). The examination report and load-test certificate must be maintained at site and produced during inspections by the Directorate of Factories.
